Sometimes known as CTZ (Columbus, Tomahawk and Zeus), Columbus refers to the plant stock of this variety originating from Hopunion breeding. The same plant  - or as near as damn it in the case of Zeus - may have different names depending upon who supplies it. Its parentage is generally unknown, although an element of Brewer’s Gold is strongly suspected. A superalpha variety it is nevertheless also used for aroma purposes and its popularity with those seeking to create a distinctively ‘American’ taste have helped make CTZ one of the most widely planted hops in the USA. A good dry hopper it is also popular with the high IBU brigade.
